Claim from Government of India in Alleged Migration of Natural Gas Dispute

CALGARY, AB—(Marketwired – November 04, 2016) – Niko Resources Ltd. (“Niko” or the “Company”) (TSX: NKO) announces that the Contractor group for the KG‐D6 Block in India received a communication earlier today from the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas of the Government of India (“GOI”), in which, based on the recommendations of the Shah Committee, the GOI has made a claim of about US$1.55 billion (Niko share US$155 million) against the Contractor group in respect of gas said to have migrated from neighboring blocks to the KG‐D6 Block.

In a press release issued earlier today by Reliance Industries Ltd. (“RIL”), the operator of the KG‐D6 Block, RIL stated:

  • In carrying out petroleum operations, the Contractor has worked within the boundaries of the KG‐D6 Block and has complied with all applicable regulations and the provisions of the KG‐D6 Production Sharing Contract (the “PSC”).
  • The claim of the GOI is based on misreading and misinterpretation of key elements of the PSC and is without precedent in the oil & gas industry, anywhere in the world.
  • According to the GOI, the Contractor is restricted to producing only that quantity of hydrocarbon as existed at the point in time when the PSC was signed. This approach overlooks the fundamental fact that at that stage, the work of exploration of the block has not even commenced and a complete lack of data makes it impossible to estimate the quantity of hydrocarbons available in the block.
  • The liability of the Contractor has not been established by any process known to law and the quantification of the purported claim is without any basis and arbitrary.
  • RIL proposes to invoke the dispute resolution mechanism in the PSC and issue a Notice of Arbitration to the GOI. RIL remains convinced of being able to fully justify and vindicate its position that the GOI's claim is not sustainable.

Niko believes the Contractor group is not liable for the amount claimed by the GOI and is considering joining RIL in invoking the dispute resolution mechanism in the PSC.

New photonics entrepreneurs need to apply now for SPIE Startup Challenge 2017

BELLINGHAM, WA and CARDIFF, UNITED KINGDOM—(Marketwired – November 04, 2016) – The application deadline is fast approaching for an opportunity for new photonics entrepreneurs to pitch technology product ideas to business development experts and venture capitalists — and win a share of more than $85,000 in cash, prizes, and support.

Applications for the seventh annual SPIE Startup Challenge 2017 are due by 18 November to SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics. The competition is held during SPIE Photonics West at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, 28 January through 2 February, enabling new entrepreneurs to pitch their business plans to corporate development experts and venture capitalists.

Cash prizes, including $10,000 for first prize, $5,000 for second prize, and $2500 for third, are funded by Founding Partner Jenoptik.

Trumpf, Open Photonics, and Edmund Optics, which also awards the first–place winner $5,000 in products, will be joined by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) as Supporting Sponsors.

Commenting on their new sponsorship, NSF SBIR/STTR Program Director Rick Schwerdtfeger said, “The NSF SBIR/STTR program is excited to sponsor the SPIE Startup Challenge to help great teams commercialize great technologies.”

Semifinalists, finalists, and winners are widely promoted by SPIE and on industry news site optics.org.

While the money is important, said 2016 winner Leslie Kimmerling of Double Helix, “one of the most important benefits is the mentoring, coaching, and advice you get. Probably the most important is the networking and the community that you continue to build.”

Eligible applicants must present an optics or photonics technology or application as the basis for a viable new business. The event focuses on new businesses and potential startups, and established companies must be pre–revenue at the time of the competition and may not have sold any products.

Winners in the 2016 SPIE Startup Challenge were a 3D nanoscale imaging system from Double Helix, a marijuana breathalyzer from Diagnostic AnSERS, and a disease diagnostic tool made with refrigerator magnets and a laser pointer from Disease Diagnostic Group.

Application, eligibility, structure, rules, and other information is at www.spie.org/startup.

Western Dermatology Consultants Urges Albuquerque and Beyond to Vote

ALBUQUERQUE, NM—(Marketwired – November 04, 2016) – Each dermatologist at Albuquerque's Western Dermatology Consultants is concerned about skin health, but the skin–focused practice's patients and their friends and family should know that the team is also committed to the health of the community and country. That's why on Election Day — Tuesday, Nov. 8 — the practice will be closing its doors at 2 p.m.

The Western Dermatology Staff will use their free time in the afternoon to head to polls and cast their votes, exercising the freedom and right central to a working democracy.

In addition, Dr. Leslie Glass will not be coming in to work at all on Nov. 8, because she decided to volunteer to drive people to the polls throughout the day, helping men and women who would otherwise find casting their ballot to be a limiting challenge.

Western Dermatology Consultants has one office at 10151 Montgomery NE and another at 4801 McMahon NW. The eastside location is also home to the Spa @ WDC, which offers cosmetic dermatology to complement the medical dermatology focus of the other two branches.

When not actively helping to decide on the future of the city, state, and nation, the dermatologists handle treatments for acne and scarring, skin cancer, nail fungus, and dry skin. The cosmetic team focuses on the aesthetic benefits of smoothing wrinkles, restoring lost volume, removing unwanted hair, rejuvenating the face, and more.

The connection between the spa and medical side allows patients to feel confident that they are getting the ideal treatment for their problem — and emphasizes the importance of everyone working together toward a common goal of improvement. Just like the United States of America!

Wherever you work, be sure to take the time to let your voice be heard. Casting your ballot is an important part of life in this country. And when you head to the polls, don't forget to wear sunscreen. Proper skin protection is vital to guard against damage from the sun, whatever takes you out and about.

Find out more about the dermatologists at Albuquerque's Western Dermatology Consultants, as well as the rest of the team members ready to serve you. Their votes may be secret, but their commitment to giving each guest and patient a personalized consultation and treatment will be no surprise to anyone who walks in the doors. Just don't come by after 2 p.m. on Nov. 8. To speak with a member of the team, call (505) 855–5503 or (505) 897–1313, or visit westerndermatology.com.
