BRF Ingredients, Symrise Awarded Top Performing Krill Replacements in F3 Challenge

NEW ORLEANS, March 07, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The F3 – Future of Fish Feed announced today the winners of the F3 Krill Replacement Challenge, recognizing Brazil–based BRF Ingredients and Germany–based Symrise for their groundbreaking innovations to replace krill in aquaculture feed. These companies are jointly winning the top prize for developing promising alternatives to krill, poised to transform the future of responsible aquaculture feed production.

“The F3 Krill Replacement Challenge has highlighted the incredible innovation and potential within the aquaculture industry, demonstrating that there are multiple solutions to replace krill,” said Kevin Fitzsimmons, chair of the F3 – Future of Fish Feed Initiative and professor and director of International Initiatives at the University of Arizona. “These alternatives will help protect our oceans while ensuring the continued growth of aquaculture.”

Symrise won for their protein hydrolysate ingredients and BRF Ingredients for their chicken hydrolysate. The winning companies shared the $100,000 USD grand prize, which was awarded during the Opening Plenary Session on March 7 at the World Aquaculture Society’s Aquaculture 2025 Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana.

These two companies' products emerged as the top performing krill replacements in a 12–week feed trial on Atlantic salmon, demonstrating superior growth, feed consumption, and survival rates. The two winners were chosen from a pool of 10 finalists, who were themselves selected from 40 global companies that entered the F3 Challenge to test their krillmeal alternatives to offer innovative solutions that could transform feed production and reduce the environmental impact of traditional krill sourcing. Testing was performed to confirm all products being used in the trial were free of marine animal ingredients.

About the Winners

“For us at BRF Ingredients, this recognition reinforces our commitment to feed the world with sustainable, high quality and global standard Ingredients. We congratulate all participants while celebrating our hydrolyzed products team’s technical skills and talent,” said Marcel Sacco, vice president of marketing and new channels at BRF Ingredients.

Symrise is a global supplier of fragrances, flavors, and ingredients for food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, serving clients in 160 countries with a focus on creating tailored, safe products that enhance quality of life and well–being. Symrise Aqua Feed leads the development of aquaculture feed ingredients, to reduce reliance on wild–caught proteins, including a functional hydrolysates support plant–based protein solutions for aquaculture, improving feed performance and sustainability.

“As a firm believer in the immense potential of byproduct valorization, I see this award as a testament to our ability to develop natural ingredients from circularly sourced raw materials,” said Vincent Percier, marketing director at Symrise Aqua Feed. “This innovation enables us to replace wild and endangered species like krill in feed formulations, contributing to a more sustainable global food production footprint.”

In addition, the F3 judges awarded honorable mentions to three companies for their exceptional performance as promising krill replacements: China–based Calysseo (single–cell protein), Netherlands–based Orffa Additives (amino–acid extract) and France–based Phileo by Lesaffre (yeast extract).

The F3 Krill Replacement Challenge, the fourth in a series of aquaculture–industry focused feed contests hosted by the F3 Initiative, was designed to spark innovation for alternatives to krill in aquaculture feed. This challenge was inspired by feed companies, particularly from China, who suggested finding alternative attractants and palatants would significantly assist in the transition to “fish–free” feed. These krill replacement products have the potential to greatly benefit a wide range of farmed seafood producers seeking to improve the performance of “fish–free” feeds, making these alternatives a promising solution for enhancing feed quality and appeal.

The environmental impact of sourcing marine ingredients for animal feed, pet food, and nutraceuticals has raised concerns among environmental advocates and the public, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable alternatives to wild–caught forage fish and krill, a critical priority as the global demand continues to rise.

Overfishing, climate change, and industrial harvesting have strained krill stocks, threatening their role as a key food source for many marine species. More sustainable alternatives are essential to reduce reliance on krill, protect ocean biodiversity, and ensure the future of aquaculture without further depleting ocean resources.

The F3 Initiative was founded on the belief that the ocean’s current fish stocks are insufficient to meet the needs of a growing global population, and that the development of innovative aquaculture feed ingredients is essential to secure a sustainable, food–secure future. The first three contests focused on eliminating wild–caught forage fish in feed.

The F3 – Future of Fish Feed is set to announce its next competition, focused on whole fish farm production, in the summer of 2025.

The Future of Fish Feed (F3) is a collaborative effort between NGOs, academic institutions, and private partnerships to accelerate the commercialization of innovative, substitute aquaculture feed ingredients to replace wild–caught fish.

Bombardier Honored with Aviation Week Network Laureate Award for Environmental Stewardship

  • Bombardier’s precedent–setting initiative to publish Environmental Product Declarations commended at the 2025 Aviation Week Network’s Laureate Awards
  • The company is the only business jet manufacturer in the world to publicly disclose the environmental footprint of its entire in–production aircraft portfolio over their full life cycle

MONTREAL, March 07, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Bombardier is proud to announce that it has been recognized as an Aviation Week Laureate Award winner for the publication of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for all its in–production aircraft. This honor acknowledges its pioneering efforts in environmental disclosure within the aerospace industry. The initiative, a significant undertaking led by Bombardier’s Aircraft Innovation team and involving multiple internal and external parties, aims to measure and communicate the environmental footprint of the company’s aircraft over their full life cycle, and embodies its spirit of progress, innovation, and leadership.

With the publication of its latest EPD in 2024, Bombardier became the only business jet manufacturer in the world to publicly disclose the environmental footprint of its entire portfolio of in–production aircraft. The EPDs are public and accessible on the company’s website.

“This initiative has set a precedent in our industry and shows how Bombardier is ahead of the curve in openly sharing the environmental information for all its aircraft,” said Sean Johnson, Vice President, Aircraft Innovation at Bombardier. “The development of the scientific methodology behind the life cycle analysis conducted on the Bombardier Global 7500 program years ago is still regarded as an exemplar among our peers. The practice of humbly sharing our environmental data to collectively explore how to drive meaningful improvement should become the new standard.”

As a crucial component of Bombardier’s extensive environmental strategy, the EPDs represent a significant step toward greater transparency. In addition to providing factual insights into optimizing the environmental performance of a product at every stage of its life cycle, the publication of EPDs is an act of accountability and offers valuable information to customers. This environmental expertise reinforces Bombardier’s advocacy efforts for the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and is worthwhile for the company’s long term EcoJet research project.

The 2025 Aviation Week Laureate Awards were celebrated on March 6, 2025, at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC.

International Women’s Day, 2025 Rule Breakers: The Compelling True Story of Afghan Girls Who Risked All to Learn

A scene from Rule Breakers, a dramatization of the story of the Afghan Girls Robotics Team.

By Joyce Chimbi and Naureen Hossain
Mar 7 2025 – Like the Afghan robotics team, Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises in the United Nations, is breaking the ‘rules’ and continuing to educate young women in that country despite an edict from the Taliban denying girls a secondary school education.

ECW’s Yasmine Sherif, the Executive Director of Education Cannot Wait, tore up a piece of paper as a symbolic representation of the Taliban edict, which she said violated international law and meant that 1.5 million girls were excluded from education. She was speaking at an International Women’s Day press conference at the United Nations.

The film Rule Breakers, and the Afghan Robotics Team it is based on, shows that “you can do anything. So for whatever we hear right now around us and see around the world, ‘We don’t have money. We can’t do this.’ We are saying—watch Rule Breakers. Create a new path.”

Rule Breakers is a dramatic feature film that follows the story of young Afghan women who have broken tradition and stereotypes to pursue their dreams in science and technology. The film, which was released today, ahead of International Women’s Day, is based on the true story of an all-girl robotics team, born and raised in Afghanistan, and the woman who taught them to dream.

ECW, with their partners, was also breaking the ‘rules’ made by the Taliban and had invested USD 30 million in a multi-year, community-based program that is supported by international partners in the most underserved areas.

“Sixty-five percent of those who are receiving education are girls and adolescent girls, so we are breaking the ban. We are breaking the rules because you have to do so if you want to do what is right in this particular context. So we have reached over 100,000 children, and as I said, 65 percent are adolescent girls,” Sherif said.

She encouraged funders to join in the rule-breaking in a climate where funding was scarce.

“There are rule breakers everywhere that believe that you still have to help the world. And I’m saying, please help us. Help the Afghan girls to get their education, because I’m sure that everyone agrees that this is a fantastic way of doing something.”

The movie, a harrowing tale and a clarion call to return Afghanistan’s girls to the safety and hope of a quality education, releases today in the United States, Canada, South Africa and Sri Lanka, and Sherif says the world should use International Women’s Day to push for the ending of the ban on girls’ secondary education in Afghanistan.

“On International Women’s Day, we are joining nations around the world to call for the end of the cruel and destructive ban on girls’ secondary education. It is time to rebuild Afghanistan based on the vast potential of her most precious natural resource: the resilient and strong Afghan girls and boys. Keep alive their hope through education and let them develop and be productive for the country,” says Sherif.

Rule Breakers is a PG-rated, family-friendly film—directed by Oscar-winner Bill Guttentag—that highlights the unique transformative power of education and raises awareness about the crucial importance of the right to education for girls in Afghanistan, in other crises and emergency settings globally, and the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education for all girls around the world.

Elaha Mahboob, co-producer and writer of Rule Breakers addresses a press conference at the United Nations.

Elaha Mahboobco-producer and writer of Rule Breakers, told the press conference that the film brought out nuances in Afghan women’s lives that are not often considered.

“Usually when we talk about Afghan girls and Afghan women, it is either around tragedy or we see an Afghan woman as merely a victim of conflict. Which is, you know, part of the story, but it is not the full picture or full story of what life has been like for women, or what life has been like in the past twenty years in Afghanistan,” Mahboob said.

“For me, it was really important we show a side of Afghanistan that we have never seen in the media or any movies. That there was progress; there were so many courageous women and men that were trying to build a future in Afghanistan. And even though you will see in the movie that there were so many [societal] challenges, like expectations and limitations for these girls, they didn’t sit back and they never gave up on their dreams. They were actually actively working toward their dreams.”

Set in Afghanistan, where learning for young women is often considered rebellion, Rule Breakers brings to life the incredible story of the Afghan Girls Robotics Team, showcasing the resilience of girls in STEM and, more so, that ambitious young girls and women in crises and emergency situations should neither be forgotten nor left behind in their pursuit of STEM. It is a story of courage, resilience, and the power of education that, importantly, seeks to inspire and keep the dream of an education alive for all children everywhere.

The Afghan Girls Robotics Team, also known as the “Afghan Dreamers,” was founded in 2017 by Roya Mahboob, a young woman from Herat, Afghanistan, who became a leading force in the country for STEM education for girls. These girls were told their dreams were impossible and that there was no place for women and girls in science, technology, and innovation.

The young women dared to dream and refused to be silenced. Overcoming staggering obstacles, Roya and her team trained in engineering and robotics and traveled the world to compete in international high school robotics competitions.

Rule Breakers is opening at cinemas in the United States, Canada, South Africa and Sri Lanka today.

As a sign of things to come, during the COVID-19 pandemic and under enormous difficulties, they successfully built a ventilator in three months. Somaya Faruqi, portrayed as Tara in the film, was the former captain of the team. Only 19 years old at the time of the Taliban takeover in 2021, Faruqi’s dream to become a mechanical engineer was already taking shape.

Now an engineering scholarship student in the United States, Faruqi is also an Education Cannot Wait (ECW) Global Champion, spearheading the launch of ECW’s global advocacy campaign—#AfghanGirlsVoices.

Rule Breakers provides the world a glimpse at the reality facing millions of Afghan girls and women today who are living under Taliban rule. They are being denied their human rights to education, their freedom and their dignity. Our voices will not be silenced,” Faruqi said.

The #AfghanGirlsVoices campaign uses moving illustrations by a young Afghan female artist and determined testimonies from Afghan girls to amplify the voices of those left behind demanding their right to education. As the global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises, ECW supports and protects holistic learning outcomes.

The film stars Ali Fazal and Nikohl Boosheri. The supporting cast includes Noorin Gulamgaus, Amber Afzalzi, Nina Hosseinzaheh, Sara Rowe and Miriam Siraj.

“The story of ‘Rule Breakers’ is more than just a film—it’s a testament to the power of education, technology and resilience. The Afghan Girls Robotics Team’s journey represents the courage of young women who refuse to accept limitations placed upon them, using science and innovation as their tools of resistance,” said Elaha Mahboob, Writer and Executive Producer of Rule Breakers.

“As someone who has worked to create opportunities for Afghan women in technology, I wanted to bring this story to life to inspire the next generation of changemakers and to show the world what is possible when young women are given access to education and opportunity.”

The ECW works with global champions like Faruqi in its mission to ensure children affected by armed conflict, climate-induced disasters, and forced displacement can access the safety, hope, and opportunity that only a quality education can provide.

Sherif reminded funders to contribute.

“To all strategic public partners, donors, and private sectors—please, please, break the rules of your own minds and say, ‘There is money; we can do this! They are breaking the rules and bans in Afghanistan to make sure every girl gets an education irrespective of that ban.” And Education Cannot Wait is the vehicle, and we have great partners on the ground. It’s happening. It’s not what we will do—it’s happening right now.”

Around the world, a staggering 234 million children caught in crises are in dire need of support to access quality education, an estimated increase of 35 million over the past three years. Forcibly displaced children, girls and children with disabilities are among the most affected.

Three years after the de facto authorities took power, Afghanistan stands out as the only country in the world where girls and women are officially forbidden to access education beyond Grade 6. Nearly 1.4 million Afghan girls have been deliberately deprived of schooling. Access to primary education has also fallen sharply, with 1.1 million fewer girls and boys attending school.

Rule Breakers offers a powerful story for the global community to unite in support of Afghan girls and with all children affected by crises who have been left behind in the education system. It is a story of hope, resilience, strength and achievements. A story that can resonate for all these 234 million children not to be forgotten. A story that brings to life the promise of a quality education for all and the potential for every child to be pulled out of the depth of darkness and be set on a path of lifelong learning and earning opportunity.

#AfghanGirlsVoices has rallied support from 50+ global leaders and prominent voices, including bestselling authors, artists, Afghan grassroots organizations, UN and government officials, civil society organizations, human rights advocates, youth activists, and more.

Developing a Thriving e-vehicles Value Chain in Africa

In 2023 UNDP in Uganda added its first electric car into their fleet as a major step forward for Uganda’s transition to a clean energy future. Credit: UNDP Uganda

By Adam Elhiraika
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, Mar 7 2025 – African countries should join hands to make the most of their own resources and build a formidable electric vehicle ecosystem that could help fast-track realisation of SDGs.

Africa has both the opportunity and the imperative to harness its vast resources for sustainable development.

With the support from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and other African institutions, the region can leverage electric vehicles (EVs) to fast-track the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and pre-empt the risk of yet another resource curse.

In December 2024, ECA organised a capacity-building workshop on the development of regional value chains for electric mobility in DRC, Morocco, and Zambia, and a high-level policy dialogue on the development of automotive regional value chains and e-mobility in Lusaka, Zambia. The events attracted participants from the three countries and others in the region.

A key outcome of the workshop was a call to expedite the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the three countries in 2025, and the inclusion of Morocco in the Zambia-DRC Special Economic Zone–a significant step toward strengthening Africa’s e-mobility value chains.

Such collaboration would enable Zambia and DRC to build refining capacity and diversify beyond exporting raw mineral, creating higher added value, increased tax revenues, and skill transfers.

Meanwhile, Morocco, aiming to produce up to 100,000 electric vehicles in 2025 and establish battery factories, would gain reliable access to strategic minerals and position Africa as a major EV producer ready to serve even the European market.

Other African countries, including Benin, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa, have the ambition to scale up their capacity in battery production and manufacturing of electric buses, cars, motorbikes and tricycles to address local demand for affordable and greener transport.

With nearly 30 per cent of the world’s reserves of minerals critical to the global energy transition such as cobalt, lithium, and nickel—Africa is uniquely positioned to benefit from the rapidly rising global demand for EVs and other low-carbon technologies. When it comes to cobalt, Africa produces over 50 per cent of global reserves and about 70 per cent of quantities traded.

However, despite over 20 African countries holding key pieces of the e-mobility puzzle, no country can thrive in isolation. Infrastructure gaps —particularly in electricity generation, storage, and charging networks —remain a challenge.

Nonetheless, African consumers are already embracing smaller EVs that offer faster returns on investment and flexible charging. This lays down a strong foundation for broader EV adoption.

By strategic collaboration, African countries can navigate global competition, stabilize markets, prevent resource exploitation and instability, and ensure the continent reaps the full benefits of its natural wealth.

A strong and coordinated African front on EVs would:

    • Reduce exposure to global price volatility
    • Drive economic diversification and job creation
    • Enable productive migration
    • Support cleaner, safer, and more affordable mobility; and
    • Catalyse and accelerate progress in electricity access and infrastructure development

All this aligns with numerous SDGs —especially 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 15 — and indirectly helps foster peace and security, as well as development across the continent.

Despite their varying development stages and paces, African countries should work together to reach their full potential, or risk being at the mercy of external pressures and increasingly aggressive global competition.

Without unity, Africa’s vast mineral wealth could become a source of political instability rather than economic progress.

This transition is not reserved for a few, “lucky” countries. ECA, in partnership with the African Union Commission (AUC), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and Afreximbank, stands ready to do the following:

    • Support national and regional coordination by enhancing negotiation capacity
    • Help develop norms and standards
    • Facilitate skill-building and innovation; and
    • Create fairer access to finance

The time for action is now. African countries must demonstrate unwavering commitment and political will by coordinating policies, facilitating trade, enhancing negotiation capacity, establishing robust norms, fostering skills and innovation, and creating equitable access to finance.

These are critical steps needed to turn this ambition into reality.

Adam Elhiraika is the Director for North Africa at the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).
